Divergent opening scene analysis

The first shot used in the scene is is an extreme long shot of the large fence that surrounds the city. The colours in the shot are mostly brown, which connotes a dystopian setting. The shot shows the fence in front of the city, suggests that the city is imprisoned behind the fence. From the scene we learn that the film is about a teenaged girl that doesn't know where she fits in society. This is told to us through the non diegetic sound of the main character's monologue over the top of the scene. As the camera zooms into the city we can see that there is damage to many of the buildings. This strengthens the notion that this is a dystopian film. It also make the audience curious about what caused the damage to the buildings. the music is quiet and peaceful. This suggests that the society that they live in is peaceful and that they don't involve themselves with the outside world. The editing used in the opening scene s quite slow. This works with the music  to create the feeling
that they are a peaceful people.
